The Tale of A-Levels Chapter 8: The Finale

Daily Ramblings November 22nd, 2007 @ 1908h

There is only one chapter left: The Day of Reckoning! Coming soon to you next year February.

The last paper is finally over. It was kind of manageable though I couldn’t do a 4 mark part question. For the rest of the questions, I was rather unsure of the answers either. But who cares! It’s over!

With this, my JC education has ended. What a tiring three month period it has been of almost non-stop studying. While I am glad the exams are over, I feel a little unsure and doubtful of the future. I mean, we are now thrown into “society” and we have to make our own decisions which will affect our lives a lot.

I have a certain two year “reprieve” from further education, in part no thanks to National Service. I guess I can delay some decision making for now.

The Tale of A-Levels Chapter 7: T Minus One

Daily Ramblings November 21st, 2007 @ 2337h

Tomorrow is the last day and the last paper which is probably the most difficult paper I am going to take for A-Levels. The Chemistry H3 people said the paper was manageable and I hope it will be the same for my paper tomorrow. It’s kind of worrying that Physics on the whole seem to be more difficult than Chemistry this time round and I hope the trend doesn’t continue for H3! It seems like different schools interpret the syllabus differently. Some of them test stuff that I’ve never seen before. I’m worried.

But as Xiang Long says, I will just try my best.

The Tale of A-Levels Chapter 6: T Minus Two

Daily Ramblings November 20th, 2007 @ 1956h

Two more days and one more paper. I know some of you have probably already finished your examinations and there is no need to taunt me over my extra two days - it won’t work ;) The reason being that Physics is something I like.

I almost had a heart attack just now when I thought I had messed up the Left-hand rule all the while when it turned out that I read the question wrongly. Is this a sign of being too stressed?

RJC’s H3 Physics Prelims is so difficult.

The Tale of A-Levels Chapter 5: Being Sick

Daily Ramblings November 19th, 2007 @ 1624h

I am down with fever for today and yesterday. It was horrible. Plus, my computer decided to mess up.

Really worried about H3 though.

The Tale of A-Levels Chapter 4: T Minus 10

Daily Ramblings November 12th, 2007 @ 2009h

I’ve began an unhealthy habit of counting down to the number of days left for A-levels. It currently stands at ten days.

The physics data response question for today was straight out from the H3 syllabus. While I guess there’s an edge for H3 students, I really didn’t know what the questions were asking for at times.

And now I am mortally afraid of what kind of questions they will come up with for H3.

Ten more days.

The Tale of A-Levels Chapter 3: Weird Sense of Humour

Interesting Stuff November 5th, 2007 @ 2330h

It seems like Math teachers like to inject some form of weird humour into the math papers. I guess it’s the only subject that you can set questions that involves some subtle sense of humour.

Take our school papers for example: Mr “Farngow” (Cantonese for sleep) researching on the sleep times of children; “Kong Si Car Sharing” (Kong Si = Chinese? for sharing); “Ai Ying” (Loves to win), “Ai Du” (Loves to gamble), “Ai Wan” (Loves to play) for the names of “characters” in a probability question.

I did quite some papers to find such humour in other papers as well. A drink called “whatsoever”, “Jet-around travel agency” and so on.

I’m really afraid of Probability and permutations questions. =(

The Tale of A-Levels Chapter 2: The Hardworking Teachers

Daily Ramblings, School November 4th, 2007 @ 2121h

The teachers of VJC are really hardworking. Let’s get down to analysing each department that is worthy of mention.

The Chemistry Department comes to mind first. They decided to compile 15 years worth of MCQ questions and answers and compiled the answers in a piece of terrifying looking piece of paper with all the answers to both the June and November Chemistry Paper MCQs for the past fifteen years. In addition, they managed to set five practice papers for the sake of revision. I really applaud them and thank them for their efforts.

The Math department is not any less hardworking. They compiled two volumes of practice questions for all the major topics for practice and even went to the extent of analysing the Paper 1 questions to come up with a list of topics that are out or in for paper two. (Go to Blackboard to find this under the section “Just for A”). They even scanned the H1 Paper for us and mentioned something about a H2 Mock Paper 2 soon. Wow… such dedication.

(On a side note, I screwed up the first Math paper. Been feeling sore over it. I shall pwn paper 2 next.)

The Economics department didn’t come up with such gimmicks but the fact that they compiled more than 20 essay questions and outlines for us deserves some credit. And I heard they are rather accurate in spotting questions. We shall see.

The Physics department compiled an archive of selected past year questions and solutions that is kind of nerve wrecking to look at. The General Paper department conducted a mock examination which I guess was good extra practice.

That’s all!

P.S.: Tomorrow is going to be the subject I’ve studied the most for - Chemistry. I hope I don’t screw it up.

The Tale of A-Levels Chapter 1: The First Papers

Daily Ramblings, Interesting Stuff October 31st, 2007 @ 2214h

I had nightmares for the past two days where I always could not finish the papers in my dream and I panicked, only to find that the rest have already finished their papers.

The physics paper yesterday was generally ok, except that I was shocked by the very first question. Oh yea, there was a single two part questions that allocated four marks to each part that required an explanation. I am pretty unsure about my answer to that question.

General Paper was alright, I guess. I got the meaning of titillating wrong and I am rather unsure of how I did. I hope I can manage a B or C?

Anyway, for all the stressed souls out there, 10 Ways to Sleep Smarter and Better. Of particular interest is lucid dream where you actually know that you are dreaming when you are inside a dream. Sounds oxymoron but it sounds pretty cool.

The Tale of A-Levels: Prologue

Daily Ramblings October 22nd, 2007 @ 2133h

This shall be another series of entries regarding the A-Levels leading up to the release of the results next year.

With slightly more than a week to go, how fare my fellow A-Levels candidates?

Have you stared mindlessly everyday at these thick stacks of notes/tutorials/papers so much so that you feel like you are accelerating the rate of global warming with so many pieces of papers?

How is the situation of your study materials? Have you found that they are in a mess with lots of papers and books stacked on top of each other?

Or perhaps you have run out of paper and ink, wondering if you can be relieved from the pain of writing over and over again?

(On a rather un-poetic note, I bought two G2 refills prior to prelims and both of them had run out.)

Lo and behold! Work hard! And good luck!

P.S.: Remember to rest once in a while too.

The Woes of PW - The Epilogue

Daily Ramblings April 14th, 2007 @ 1116h

As promised, here’s the last part of the entry in the Woes of PW Series. This isn’t exactly a woe but I guess I’ll stick to the tradition of naming posts. :P

Yesterday was a great day except for the part about me not getting enough sleep and almost dying during PE, probably due to the lack of sleep. It’s been all resolved today! I’ve gotten my 10 hours of much-needed sleep.

Right after PE, we got back our much-awaited PW results. I’m glad to say everyone in my group, except someone, got an A and they all deserved it. If I am to be cruel, I should say the one who got C deserved it as well.

A few of us met in the evening to have dinner at a certain Western food restaurant at Katong. Can’t remember the name but the food was great. Musicfest was next. It was clearly worth the $12. Great stuff.

To end off, for those who know, I’ve been working on a Thinkquest entry these days and that explains for the lack of my sleep as the deadline is on MONDAY! So for those who want to help out, please help preview the site @ this link and then help us fill out a survey here. Thanks a lot!
