Close call

Close call, originally uploaded by New Domain.

Chkdsk Fixing the errors on the filesystem I was saved from a close call of losing all my files, programs and settings on my pc.

I woke up to find my brother complaining of a stop error and when i reboot, the system won’t boot. I loaded up the windows recovery console on the windows cd and fixed the boot sector. Really close call to re-installing the operating system.

Just to play sate i did a check on the file system.

EDIT: In the end I needed to reinstall windows after all… the files were indeed corrupted. Well, the PC needed a makeover anyway.

Christmas 2006

General December 25th, 2006 @ 2028h

So, how was your Christmas? Did you enjoy that party you went to? As for me, I spent the whole day at my cousin’s place, not partying or anything. Christmas to me is just like another public holiday. I don’t think I’ve celebrated it once before though.

Digital Media Winners and Losers of 2006 is an interesting article. Might be worth your 5 minutes reading.

On a side note, I wonder if this comment is a spam or not. Clearly, it has nothing to do with the post in question but it doesn’t seem like some post a SPAM bot will make. Tricky.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

General, Site, Wishlist December 21st, 2006 @ 2204h

I took a trip down to my aunt’s place at Clementi today (which is almost at the other end of Singapore from where I live) to take a look at my cousin’s PC, which was apparently not working. (It turns out that it was because the video card was loose.)

Anyway, while I was walking from the MRT station to her house, I passed by some places that gave me some kind of a feeling of nostalgia. I used to live with my aunt when I about 4 I think. Walking through those places really made me feel how quickly 10+ years have passed.

My cousin had an operation on her knees (because of reasons I can’t remember) and can’t walk around. So she had to stay at home everyday for a few weeks until she can walk fully again. She just returned from working in New York.

She lent me the box set of Lord of the Rings Extended DVD which she bought at only USD 40+! I was simply amazed! Damn, I want to get my hands on this box set for myself! It’s sold at (I think) nearly SGD 200 at shops locally!

On a side note, my recent attempts at combating SPAM bots seemed to have worked. I now use two plugins for this purpose: Bad Behaviour to block any spam bots from sucking my bandwidth try (i.e. blocking their access) and Akismet to filter any comments that bots which has passed through the first layer of defence post.

Somehow, this seemed to have worked to a pretty large extent - only 6 spam posts in two days compared to the 30+ per day from before!

Anyway I’ve added some form of advertisement on the site, powered by Adsense. I would call it a subtle way of placing it because you only see it if you view the posts on its own page. (i.e. when you click on the post title link.) I wonder how much I can earn by placing it like this. We shall see.

Combating the Evils of Nokia

General December 14th, 2006 @ 1923h

Apparently, full instructions for converting a N80 Phone to a N80 Internet Edition phone is now available, just as I have predicted before. But anyway, I think I’ll hold off the upgrading for now. I’ll wait till an easier and safer method (of which means the firmware is available through Nokia Software Update) becomes available.

Bought a 2GB Kingston mini SD card for $43.70. A pretty good deal if you ask me.

December Already

Anime & Manga, General December 2nd, 2006 @ 1254h

Lo! and behold! It’s December already. Time passes kind of fast eh? I guess it’s time to start doing some work. =(

Been watching some animé and dramas these few days. Namely Noein, a very sci-fi anime and GTO live action.

Now that December has come, it’s time to do some shopping. Some stuff I’ve caught my eye…

The next few days before the chalet, I’m going to spend time playing this. A pity my graphic card is not powerful enough.

Random Stuff

Daily Ramblings, General November 14th, 2006 @ 1718h

Damn, I’ve gone and DONE IT! Everything shall start tomorrow. Will need your help Zenden ;)

Went to install Vista Transformation Pack and now the desktop looks as Vista-like as it can be. Looks pretty good to me. Guess I’ll be using this look until I get Vista next year.

WARNING: If you want to istall that, be sure to follow all instructions to the letter or your system will die.

DVR+R DL discs are so freaking expensive. One disc with a jewel case from Imation costs $8. Almost daylight robbery. I haven’t seen them in spindles yet. I think that would be worth getting.

… maybe I’ll post more random stuff later.

EDIT:
I’ve completed some basic tagging feature of the tagboard. You can already find Zenden’s and Sleep’s tagboard online. If you want one too, ask me for it ;)

With this, I can declare this version a “mini-milestone”. You can download it here. No instructions provided. Figure out yourself. This is still Alpha. Gosh, it might even be pre-alpha!

Wikipedia Vandalism

Wikipedia is not spared from vandals either.

The article of the day…

has been vandalised…

and again…

Well, they’ve reverted the article to the original un-vandalised form.

Sick

General November 6th, 2006 @ 0013h

Having a sore throat - a symptom of fever, at least for me. I can feel the onset of a cold.

Why must it be 3 days before oral presentation?

University Panel Discussion

General October 28th, 2006 @ 2204h

Woke up early today, on a Saturday morning, to go to school to attend a boring and useless talk about university admission. The speakers from the various universities weren’t that good except for the one from SMU. The only good thing is probably the bag of information booklets they gave us. And it is through them that I think I have finally decided on the course of study. If I could, I would love to do a double degree on Physics and some other engineering. NTU has a course that offers this. Of course, if I could get a scholarship, I would rather go overseas to study.

In other news, I’ve released a new version of my thumbnail generating class. You might want to take a look at that. Fixed some bugs, wrote a new documentation.

You can now generate your own thumbnails easily with this tool. Enjoy!
