(Warning: Long Rant)
Suddenly, my old hobby of reading has come back to me again. Instead of Enid Blyton and JRR Tolkein, it’s now Stephen King. Instead of the Lord of the Rings, it’s now the Dark Tower. (If you are interested, you can find torrents of his books here.)
I used to read a lot during primary school. Somehow, I stopped during Secondary school, reading occasionally like the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. Somehow, I’ve began to go to the library to borrow books to read now. I have a lot I want to read, but I just don’t have the time to do so. I read for entertainment sake, who cares about GP and English?
It all started recently when I decided to pick up a Stephen King book that I’ve had my eyes on for a long time but haven’t gotten around reading it - The Dark Tower series. Seeing that this author has so many books, I decided to try the most prominent series of his - The Dark Tower -and was pleasantly surprised to find out that all his novels are connected via one way or another in a multiverse.
I was browsing through several bookshops today and was utterly disappointed to discover very few had any Stephen King books. They were all saturated with more “main-stream” and “popular” books like Dan Brown’s pieces of crap-ridden novels(Not that I think his books are not good. They are entertaining to read but at the same time, filled with loads of bogus and false “facts”.). His “boxed up combo collections” were everywhere and all Stephen King gets is a sad corner with less than 10 novels. Come on, he surely deserves more than this? All his written works (excluding any screenplays, short stores etc.) amount to more than 10 times the measly 4 books Dan Brown has written.
What I am trying to say is that some bookshops tend to give priority to some obviously over-rated books. There are much more good or even better literature out there. The best bookshop I’ve seen with the most variety of books and without too much emphasis on the “main-stream” books is Kinokuniya at Orchard. The bottom line: There isn’t only one “Da Vinci Code” in the world.
Been looking around for “The Stand”, one of the most famous works of Stephen King. Alas, I have never ever seen this novel in bookshops or even at libraries. Perhaps I should finish the Dark Tower series first. Currently in the middle of Book II - The Drawing of the Three.
